Apex Learning Expands Middle School Digital Curriculum

Apex Learning, a recognized pioneer and innovator in online learning for secondary education, announces the expansion of its middle school digital curriculum for the 2018–2019 school year. The recently released 2017 NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) results show only 33 percent of eighth-graders are proficient in math and 36 percent proficient in reading, indicating a majority of incoming ninth graders lack the knowledge and skills required for success in high school.

For more than twenty years, Apex Learning has partnered with school districts nationwide to implement digital learning programs to keep high school students on track for graduation. Now with a complete digital curriculum in math, science, English, and social studies for grades 6–8, Apex Learning is able to support middle school students in mastering grade-level content and put them on the path to high school success.

Paul Ottum, Online Learning Specialist for Beaverton School District, recognizes the importance of readying students for success in high school. “In many cases, students leave school because they aren’t prepared academically for high school,” Ottum said. “Students who fail a course during their freshman year are much more likely to leave school before they graduate.”

The district uses Apex Learning Tutorials to help middle school students master grade-level content and prepare them for the rigors of high school. According to Ottum, “Tutorials are the way to do this right, enabling our teachers to offer each student personalized support and just-in-time remediation, which is precisely what middle school students need.”

“We’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of digital curriculum on high school achievement levels and graduation rates,” said Cheryl Vedoe, CEO of Apex Learning. “We are excited to also be able to support districts in preparing more middle school students for the rigors of high school.”
